Mary tells Markham that her friends and members of her congregation are giving an entertainment in the Berkeley Theatre. It is in her honor and there will be a reception afterwards. SHe is asking Markham to give a 10 minute talk or to read one of his poems. (Man with the Hoe). She would like Mrs. M there. Let her know as soon as posible so there names can go on the Program along with Mrs. john Dillion, Dr. Mason and ohters. She enjoy his tribute to Elizabeth Towne.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
